PDS FHIR API - Expose person ethnicity
Person data on Spine includes ethnicity. This is not available through PDS FHIR API (or the PDS HL7 v3 API). It is sensitive data and so may be excluded for IG reasons. However, could this be made available as a separate API based on CIS2 roles/activities? Or agree it is included.
UEC settings use ethnicity - it can be significant in the triage. And at the moment 111 settings ask the caller about this which can cause distress as is complex and takes time.
Happy to help get UEC providers involved to discuss user needs.

Stephen KochKate, PDS only has ethnicity at birth, which we use for 6 months and not after this. The most comprehensive source for ethnicity for English citizens is GPIT systems and this field doesn't currently sync with PDS so PDS is not currently a good source for ethnicity. We do have a transformation project for demographics where we are going to investigate getting GPIT to sync ethnicity with PDS. if and when we do this we'll add ethnicity into the PDS API.

JamesHI Stephen, Has any progress been made on getting the ethnicity available on Spine and through this API? Is there any planned timescales for this? Thanks.

Christina TanHi James, not yet. As ethnicity is a protected characteristic, policy-level discussions will need to take place before this lands on the PDS roadmap. I will update this thread with updates on the decision to include in the PDS roadmap, and latest view of timescales.

Natasha WaltonWhy dont we capture ethnicity in maternity systems and then add this to PDS rather than via GPIT systems. Ethnicity doesnt change unlike other attributes that we do capture and this is really important
